Product Description: This WWII USMC Cherry Point Leather Squadron Patch is a pristine original. It is made of natural colored leather, with a colorful decal design. It’s unissued and unused. The decal depicts a wartime propeller airplane beneath the snarling face of unit mascot “Jiggs” the bulldog, who is wearing an aviator’s helmet and goggles, all on a blue field. This field is encircled by a yellow border with the wording “United States Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina.”  This air station was commissioned in 1942, and its primary wartime purpose was training units and individual Marines for service in the Pacific Theater. This air station was also a base for anti-submarine warfare, and played a role in the 1943 sinking of a German U-Boat. This rare unissued WWII USMC Cherry Point Leather Squadron Patch is in incredible, near mint condition, with 100 percent of the original decal, and no cracking or other damage. The colors remain bright and eye-catching. It’s a desirable piece of USMC insignia, that would be hard to upgrade.

Historical Description: Squadron patches have a rich tradition in the US military. These were introduced before WWII, primarily for wear on flight gear, with colorful graphics unique to each squadron. The graphics were in part designed by Disney and Warner Brothers, and by the end of WWII more than 12,o00 designs had been created. The patches were sometimes made of leather, and at other times hand or machine embroidered on wool or felt. There was a tremendous variety of patches produced in different styles. The leather versions were sometimes hand painted, and at other times were made using decals applied to the leather surface. The leather could be incised to accentuate the design. Some squadron patches were made of different colors of leather or wool, pieced together. Some were made of painted or silk screened canvas. The patches were made in the US as well as in the various theaters of war where air squadrons were stationed. During WWII, cartoon mascots were very widely used. After 1947, most squadron patches featured traditional military heraldry.
