Product Description: This United States WWI Distinguished Service Cross, numbered 2105, is a superb example of one of the most prestigious U.S. military decorations. Established in 1918, the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is awarded for extraordinary heroism in combat against an armed enemy, second only to the Medal of Honor.

The cross is crafted in bronze, with its intricate design crisply detailed. The obverse features a cross with an American eagle perched at its center, clutching arrows and an olive branch. The eagle is surrounded by a laurel wreath representing valor and victory. The planchet retains its original bronze finish, with an even patina that adds to its authenticity. The reverse is engraved with the serial number 2105, confirming its authenticity as an early, numbered example from the World War I period.

The ribbon is the original two-tone design, featuring vertical blue and red stripes, symbolizing loyalty and sacrifice. The ribbon bar is intact, with light wear commensurate with its age. This Distinguished Service Cross is in excellent condition, with no repairs or significant damage, making it a superb addition to any collection of U.S. military awards.

Historical Description: The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) was authorized by President Woodrow Wilson on January 2, 1918, during the height of World War I. Intended to honor acts of extraordinary heroism in combat, the DSC filled a crucial role as the United States entered the war with no decoration between the Medal of Honor and lower-level awards such as campaign medals. The first DSCs were awarded in 1918, with retroactive recognition granted to some soldiers for acts of valor dating back to the early months of the U.S. involvement in the war.

The design of the medal, created by sculptor Evarts Tracy, symbolizes the ideals of courage and service. The eagle represents the United States, while the laurel wreath highlights the valorous achievements of the recipient. Numbered examples like this one, marked 2105, were issued during World War I, making them highly sought after by collectors due to their direct association with early recipients of the award.

The DSC recognized soldiers who demonstrated exceptional heroism in battles such as the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, Saint-Mihiel, and other key engagements of the war. Recipients of this prestigious award often displayed courage under fire, risking their lives to protect their comrades and accomplish critical objectives in the face of enemy opposition.

This early-numbered Distinguished Service Cross represents a piece of U.S. military history, commemorating the bravery and sacrifices of American soldiers during World War I. Its excellent condition and historical significance make it a highly desirable artifact for collectors and historians alike.
