Product Description: A rare and historically important U.S. Navy Dewey Medal, struck in bronze by Tiffany & Co. and awarded to Andy Wind, Coal Passer aboard USS Boston, in recognition of his participation in the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898—one of the decisive naval engagements of the Spanish–American War.
The obverse features an exceptionally detailed relief portrait of Admiral George Dewey, surrounded by the inscription: “DEWEY • MANILA BAY • MAY 1 1898.” The reverse presents a dramatic naval battle scene, prominently showing USS Olympia leading the American fleet into action. As customary for these medals, the recipient’s name is engraved along the rim.
Originally issued with a blue and yellow silk suspension ribbon, this US Dewey Medal by Tiffany – Andy Wind Coal Passer – USS Boston has lost its ribbon over time, but the medal itself remains a fine and evocative artifact from one of the U.S. Navy’s most celebrated victories.
Historical Description: The Dewey Medal was authorized by the United States Congress in 1899 to honor the officers and enlisted men who participated in Commodore George Dewey’s decisive victory over the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. This battle marked the beginning of American expansion into the Pacific and solidified the U.S. Navy’s dominance as a global maritime power. Issued exclusively to those who served aboard the participating ships, the medal was designed and produced by Tiffany & Co., making it one of the most prestigious and artistically crafted military decorations of the era.
With its impressive provenance, original ribbon, and recipient engraving, this is a highly desirable and rare example of one of the most iconic medals from the Spanish-American War, particularly notable for its connection to a named enlisted sailor of the USS Boston.
