We purchased this along with some other items out of Nashville Tennessee from an estate broker. They purchased these items from the family of a Latvian gentleman who emigrated to the United States in the late 1940’s and passed away some years ago. They came across these items while cleaning out his house.

Historical Description:  During the first half of the 20th century, Romanian medals reflected the nation’s evolving military, political, and social identity amid periods of both conflict and consolidation. Following Romania’s independence and the Balkan Wars, and later during World War I, a variety of decorations were instituted to recognize valor, loyalty, and long service. Medals such as the Medalia Virtutea Militară (Military Virtue Medal) and the Medalia pentru Vitejie (Medal for Bravery) honored acts of courage in combat, while other awards acknowledged fidelity to the crown, civil service, or contributions to national defense. Many of these decorations were richly detailed, often incorporating heraldic symbols, royal insignia, and national motifs, reflecting the importance placed on both prestige and visual symbolism.

By the interwar period, Romania continued to expand its system of honors to encompass a broader range of achievements, including civil and military merit. Medals were often produced in bronze, silver, or gilt finishes, accompanied by silk or woven suspension ribbons, with classes or grades indicating rank or level of distinction. The awards served not only as personal recognition but also as tools of statecraft, reinforcing loyalty to the monarchy and the emerging national identity. Today, these medals offer insight into Romania’s social and military history, illustrating how decoration and symbolism were used to foster honor, cohesion, and patriotic sentiment during a transformative era.
