Pointon is engraved on one side with the recipient’s name and features etched decoration to the reverse reading “1st Special Forces Group (ABN) – Spec Forces Thailand,” accompanied by the Special Forces insignia, greatly enhancing its historical and collector appeal.
Believed to be an unissued Ontario presentation piece dating from the 1971–1973 period, the knife remains in outstanding Excellent ++ condition. The blade retains approximately 98% of its original parkerized finish, showing only minimal handling or storage wear. The pommel retains its original gray issue paint, an attractive and increasingly difficult feature to find intact on surviving examples.
The accompanying scabbard likewise remains in unissued condition and retains the original sharpening stone. Verdigris is present at the metal fittings, consistent with long-term storage and age. The reverse of the scabbard bears the correct issue stamp dated 1973, further supporting the period authenticity and presentation nature of the piece.
Overall, an exceptionally scarce and historically evocative US Pilots Knife Ontario – 1973 – SFC George E. Pointon, combining Special Forces Thailand association, outstanding preservation, and strong provenance appeal, making it a particularly attractive offering for advanced collectors of Vietnam War militaria, Special Forces artifacts, and U.S. military edged weapons.
Historical Description: The US Pilots Knife became one of the most widely carried and recognizable edged weapons of the Vietnam War era. Originally developed for U.S. Air Force pilots as a survival tool, the knife quickly gained popularity among Army infantry, helicopter crews, Marines, Navy personnel, and Special Forces units operating throughout Southeast Asia. The pattern featured a durable carbon steel blade, stacked leather grip, steel pommel, and leather scabbard with integrated sharpening stone pouch, making it exceptionally well suited for harsh jungle conditions and field use.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, the US Pilots Knife became closely associated with elite airborne and Special Forces personnel serving in Vietnam and Thailand. Unit-marked and presentation examples connected to organizations such as the 1st Special Forces Group are particularly sought-after today, reflecting the personal equipment and battlefield utility carried by American servicemen during the conflict. Surviving examples retaining original finish, dated scabbards, and documented wartime associations remain highly desirable among advanced collectors of Vietnam War militaria and U.S. military edged weapons.
