Product Description: An exceptional early model example of the iconic Fat Guard SOG Knife with Sheath, dating to the Vietnam War era, presented here in remarkably well-presed, near mint condition. Measuring approximately 10 5/8 inches in overall length, the knife features a 6 1/8 inch blade retaining its original dark blued finish, exhibiting minimal signs of age while preserving a rich, even tone characteristic of period manufacture.

The distinctive brass “fat” cross guard and pommel cap display light, even tarnish consistent with age, contributing to the knife’s authentic historical presence. The handle is composed of stacked leather washers with black spacers, all remaining in excellent condition with minimal wear and strong visual continuity.

The knife is accompanied by its original patent black leather scabbard, likewise preserved in near mint condition, complete with the proper period sharpening stone housed in the front pocket. The scabbard remains supple and well-formed, with all snaps functioning as intended.

A highly desirable Vietnam War–era example, this Fat Guard SOG Knife with Sheath combines historical relevance, originality, and exceptional condition, making it a compelling acquisition for advanced collectors of military edged weapons.

Historical Description:  The “SOG knife” is closely associated with the elite, covert U.S. special operations unit Military Assistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group, which operated during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1972. These teams conducted highly classified reconnaissance and direct-action missions across Southeast Asia, often in extreme field conditions that demanded a compact, durable, and dependable fighting knife. The design that became known as the Vietnam-era SOG knife drew inspiration from earlier special forces blades such as the Case V-42 Stiletto, but was adapted for broader utility in jungle warfare as well as close combat.

Manufactured primarily in Japan by firms including Yogi Shokai, these knives typically featured a darkened blade to reduce reflection, a heavy brass “fat guard,” a stacked leather handle for secure grip, and a leather scabbard often fitted with a sharpening stone pouch. While documentation is limited due to the classified nature of MACV-SOG operations, these knives have become strongly linked with U.S. special operations forces in Vietnam. Today, original Vietnam War–era examples are highly collectible, valued for their craftsmanship, battlefield association, and historical significance.
