Historical Description: The United States Marine Corps bell-crown visor cap of the World War I era was a distinctive element of early 20th-century Marine dress, defined by its tall, flared “bell” shape and stiff black leather visor. Constructed from dark blue wool to match the iconic dress blue coat and trousers with scarlet trim, the cap featured a black mohair band and was fronted by the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor. A leather chin strap—black for enlisted Marines and often gilt for officers—was secured by side buttons, while officers’ versions could include additional ornamentation, reflecting rank and status within the Corps.
Though visually striking, the bell-crown cap was primarily reserved for garrison and formal wear, complementing other period uniforms such as the high-collared dress blues and khaki service dress used in warmer climates. In the field during WWI, Marines adopted more practical headgear like campaign hats or steel helmets, marking a contrast between ceremonial appearance and combat necessity. The bell-crown cap thus stands as a transitional artifact, bridging older 19th-century styling with the more streamlined service caps that would replace it in the postwar years.
