Product Description: This is a fine late-war issue Kriegsmarine U-Boat War Badge, awarded to crewmen of Germany’s famed U-Bootwaffe during the Second World War. Die-struck in zinc, this example was produced by Friedrich Orth (F.O.), a desirable mid- to late-war manufacturer whose badges have become increasingly sought after.
The badge displays the classic design: a surfaced U-boat cutting through the waves, framed by an oak and laurel wreath, and topped by the national eagle clutching a swastika. As is characteristic of Orth’s zinc production, much of the original gilded finish remains intact, with the high points showing subtle wear that gives way to the zinc base—a hallmark of authentic late-war patina.
The reverse hardware is textbook for this maker, fully intact and fully functional, showing only light, honest age. The overall presentation is excellent+, with sharp detail, attractive original finish, and no repairs.
A strong and appealing example of an F.O.-made Kriegsmarine U-Boat War Badge, ideal for any naval, awards, or late-war collection.
Historical Description: The U-Boat Badge (U-Boots-Kriegsabzeichen) was instituted on October 13, 1939 by Kriegsmarine leader Grossadmiral Erich Raeder, to recognize the combat achievements of the extremely dangerous and all-volunteer U-Boat service. The design of the badge features a German submarine surrounded by a wreath, surmounted by a German national eagle and swastika emblem. The original design for the badge, submitted by Kriegsmarine sailors, was refined by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus. To earn this badge, submarine sailors had to participate in a minimum of two missions against the enemy. If a sailor was wounded on a single mission, he could receive the U-Boat Badge. The badge could be worn both on and off duty. A total of 9,536 U-Boat Badges were awarded during WWII.
