Historical Description: The NSKOV, or Nationalsozialistische Kriegsopferversorgung (National Socialist War Victim’s Care), was a state-supported organization established in 1934 under the auspices of the Nazi Party to provide aid, representation, and social integration for wounded and disabled veterans of the First World War. The organization emerged from earlier veterans’ welfare associations and was incorporated into the wider structure of Nazi-affiliated social programs designed to promote ideological unity and loyalty to the regime.
The NSKOV operated under the direction of the NSDAP’s Office for Public Welfare, and its mission extended beyond basic assistance—it aimed to instill a sense of continued purpose, national pride, and political alignment among wounded servicemen. Members wore distinctive uniforms and participated in parades, rallies, and public ceremonies, often representing the sacrifice of the wartime generation in the broader narrative of national resurgence promoted by the Third Reich.
The organization also issued a number of decorations and insignia, including the NSKOV Honor Badge, awarded to veterans in recognition of service and sacrifice. These items, often produced by firms such as Deschler & Sohn, were finely made and are now sought after by collectors for their historical and symbolic significance.
By the end of the Second World War, the NSKOV, like other Nazi-affiliated organizations, was dissolved and banned. Today, its memorabilia serves as a reminder of how the Nazi regime co-opted veterans’ welfare as part of its wider propaganda and control efforts.
