Historical Description: The Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) was founded on April 15, 1865, immediately following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, amid fears of a larger Confederate conspiracy. It became the first and one of the most prestigious hereditary military societies in the United States. Composed initially of Union officers who served in the Civil War, MOLLUS later expanded to include male descendants of those officers, preserving the memory and values of Union service. The official badge of the Order features a five-armed gold Maltese cross with a red enameled center. Suspended from a red, white, and blue ribbon, the badge echoes the ideals of loyalty, patriotism, and service to the Union. Worn with pride by veterans and descendants alike, the MOLLUS badge stands as a powerful emblem of post-Civil War remembrance and national unity.
