Product Description: Ottoman Empire, Order of Osmanieh (Osmania), 3rd Class Commander neck badge, circa 1915, silver with gilt and green/red enamel, awarded for distinguished service to the state. This seven-pointed star features the Sultan’s tughra and AH 699 date on the reverse. Some enamel loss is present on star points, and the original neck ribbon is missing, but the suspension ring remains intact. Despite minor wear, the piece is overall in very fine condition and remains a desirable example of late Ottoman chivalric honors.
Historical Description: The Order of Osmanieh or Osmania (Ottoman Turkish: Nişan-ı Osmani), established in 1862 by Sultan Abdülaziz of the Ottoman Empire, was one of the highest honors bestowed in the late Ottoman period. Created to recognize outstanding service to the state, the order was awarded to both military and civilian personnel, including foreign dignitaries. It was second only to the Order of Distinction (Nişan-ı Imtiyaz) in terms of prestige. The order had several classes, typically ranging from the first to the fourth, each distinguished by size and adornments. The decoration featured a star-shaped badge with green and red enamel, bearing Islamic inscriptions and a central medallion. Following the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, the order, along with other imperial decorations, was officially discontinued, marking the end of a centuries-old tradition of chivalric honors in Turkish history.
