Product Description: A rare and historically important U.S. Navy Dewey Medal, struck in bronze by Tiffany & Co. and awarded to Andy Wind, Coal Passer aboard USS Boston, in recognition of his participation in the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898—one of the decisive naval actions of the Spanish–American War. The medal survives in excellent condition, displaying handsome surfaces, crisp detail, and an attractive, even patina that highlights its finely executed artistry.

The obverse presents an exceptionally sharp relief portrait of Admiral George Dewey, encircled by the inscription: “DEWEY • MANILA BAY • MAY 1 1898.” The reverse depicts a dramatic and beautifully rendered naval battle scene, with USS Olympia leading the American fleet into action. As customary for the type, the recipient’s name is engraved along the rim, and in this example the engraving of “Andy Wind” remains strong, legible, and deeply cut. Although the original blue and yellow silk suspension ribbon is no longer present, this U.S. Dewey Medal by Tiffany – Andy Wind Coal Passer – USS Boston remains an exceptionally appealing and evocative artifact—an enduring testament to one sailor’s role in one of the U.S. Navy’s most celebrated victories.

Historical Description: The Dewey Medal was authorized by the United States Congress in 1899 to honor the officers and enlisted men who participated in Commodore George Dewey’s decisive victory over the Spanish fleet in Manila Bay. This battle marked the beginning of American expansion into the Pacific and solidified the U.S. Navy’s dominance as a global maritime power. Issued exclusively to those who served aboard the participating ships, the medal was designed and produced by Tiffany & Co., making it one of the most prestigious and artistically crafted military decorations of the era.

With its impressive provenance, original ribbon, and recipient engraving, this is a highly desirable and rare example of one of the most iconic medals from the Spanish-American War, particularly notable for its connection to a named enlisted sailor of the USS Boston.
