Historical Description: The Civil War Campaign Medal was established by the U.S. Army in 1905, nearly four decades after the end of the Civil War, to officially recognize Union veterans who served honorably during the conflict. The medal was issued to eligible veterans or, in cases where the recipient was deceased, to their surviving next of kin. Only 9,500 of these medals were issued, making them relatively scarce and highly prized by collectors.

The Civil War was the most significant and devastating conflict in U.S. history, pitting Union forces against the Confederacy in a struggle that shaped the nation’s future. Over 2.2 million Union troops served during the war, fighting in pivotal battles such as Gettysburg, Antietam, and Vicksburg. Despite the immense sacrifices made during the war, no official campaign medals were awarded at the time. The creation of the Civil War Campaign Medal decades later reflected the nation’s recognition of the service and sacrifice of its Civil War veterans.

This medal was designed by the Philadelphia Mint and produced under the direction of the War Department. Its design elements were intended to evoke the patriotism and valor of the Union soldiers and sailors who preserved the Union during its most perilous era. The addition of the unique rim numbering, such as the 1253 marking on this example, allowed for precise tracking of issued medals, adding a layer of historical authenticity and collectible appeal.

In excellent condition, this Civil War Campaign Medal represents a tangible link to one of the most critical periods in American history and serves as a lasting tribute to those who fought to preserve the Union. With its low production numbers and named or numbered designations, it remains one of the most sought-after campaign medals for collectors and historians alike.
