Product Description: This stunning, WWII-era United States Navy Cross is an outstanding example of one of the most prestigious military decorations awarded by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. This piece features the classic open brooch and standard bronze planchet design, showcasing exceptional detailing in the cross and surrounding laurel wreath.
The reverse remains blank, as is typical for Navy Crosses not engraved with a recipient’s name. The brooch is a period replacement, taken from a WWI Allied Victory Medal and carefully darkened to match the original look. The deep navy-blue ribbon with white edge stripes is in excellent condition, retaining its vibrant color with no fraying or discoloration.
This medal has only minor, age-appropriate patina, with no significant wear beyond light storage marks. It is an exceptional acquisition for any serious collector or enthusiast of U.S. military awards
Historical Description: The Navy Cross, established by Congress on February 4, 1919, is the second-highest decoration awarded for valor in combat by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, surpassed only by the Medal of Honor. Originally conceived to honor extraordinary heroism during World War I, the Navy Cross has been awarded to service members for acts of bravery in every major conflict since.
The design of the Navy Cross has remained largely unchanged since its inception, featuring a cross with an eagle perched atop a fouled anchor surrounded by laurel branches. The laurel represents achievement, while the fouled anchor signifies naval service and tradition. The original World War I variants featured distinctive split suspension loops, while later examples adopted a more standardized design. This particular medal is not a “Black Widow” variant, a term used to describe a specific type of Navy Cross produced during World War II with a unique blackened finish on the reverse suspension.
The Navy Cross has a rich history of being awarded to some of the most notable figures in U.S. military history, including Chester W. Nimitz, Lewis “Chesty” Puller, and John F. Kennedy. Collectors of U.S. military decorations value these medals not only for their craftsmanship but also for the extraordinary acts of valor they commemorate. This piece, in exceptional condition, serves as a lasting tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who have earned this esteemed decoration.
