Product Description: A historically significant and exceptionally well-preserved WWII US M1 Helmet belonging to Lt. Col. Frank C. Schroeder Jr., a distinguished Glider Pilot of the 18th Airborne Corps. This is a remarkable and complete airborne grouping, offering impeccable provenance and an unparalleled connection to a courageous officer of the era.
The WWII US M1 Helmet remains in excellent condition, retaining its original OD green finish, with a clearly visible Lt. Colonel rank insignia on the front. The front seam, fixed bale shell exhibits only minor signs of age, with some light corrosion on the dome—an expected feature of combat-used helmets. The chin strap is complete and fully functional, while the back of the helmet proudly bears the signature officer’s “Follow-Me” white stripe, a distinctive marking of leadership in the field.
The liner is intact, displaying only light, honest wear, with its original leather chinstrap and sweatband still present and functional. There is minor cracking along the edge of the liner, consistent with age but not detracting from its historical integrity.
Accompanying the WWII US M1 Helmet is a pair of Lt. Col. Schroeder’s personal binoculars, further enhancing the rarity of this set. The binoculars remain largely intact, with only one lens cup broken off. To solidify the provenance, this grouping includes a copy of a wartime photograph of Lt. Col. Schroeder wearing this very helmet and using these binoculars.
This exceptional set was purchased directly from his son, Frank Schroeder III, ensuring an unquestionable chain of ownership and historical authenticity. Helmets with such direct lineage to a high-ranking airborne officer—especially from the elite 18th Airborne Corps—are exceedingly rare, making this a true collector’s centerpiece.
A museum-worthy and one-of-a-kind grouping, this WWII US M1 Helmet and binocular set embodies the valor and leadership of a WWII airborne officer. A truly rare opportunity for the serious WWII collector, military historian, or airborne enthusiast.
Historical Description: The 18th Airborne Corps played a pivotal role in major operations during World War II, including Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge. Glider pilots like Lt. Col. Frank C. Schroeder Jr. were instrumental in delivering troops and equipment behind enemy lines in often dangerous, unpowered aircraft. Their missions were hazardous, requiring exceptional skill and bravery. The M1 helmet was standard issue for U.S. forces, but helmets bearing officer insignia, especially from specialized units like the airborne corps, are highly sought after. This grouping not only highlights the personal story of a brave glider pilot but also represents the broader history of airborne operations that were crucial to the Allied victory in Europe.
