Product Description: This scarce and very appealing WWII SA Brown Shirt is a textbook example of an early Sturmabteilung (SA) uniform, complete with period-applied insignia and desirable unit attribution to Gruppe Niedersachsen, Sturm 21 of Standarte 16.

The tunic is constructed of heavy brown cotton, typical of prewar manufacture. Both collar tabs are made of dark brown badge cloth formed over stiffeners. The left tab is chain-stitched in white thread with “Sturm 21” and “Standard 16”.  The right tab bears a single metal pip, denoting the rank of Scharführer. Each tab is hand-sewn to the collar, as is characteristic of period assembly. The collar itself is neatly edged with black-and-white woven piping, matching the single shoulder board, which features the same black-and-white twisted cord set on a brown cloth base — the group color for Niedersachsen.

Loose on the eft sleeve is a printed NSDAP armband, showing vibrant color with only minimal toning from age. The armband was originally found detached from the shirt but clearly period to the piece.

The front features two pleated breast pockets, each secured by a bright gilt-finished metal button — all of which are present and maker-marked. One pocket retains a 1936 Moers tinnie, adding an attractive period touch. A total of nine gold metal buttons remain intact, retaining nearly all of their original luster. The French cuffs are elegantly finished, each held by two opposing gilt buttons joined with a loop.

Inside the collar is a manufacturer’s ink stamp marked “3694 54,” likely denoting the patent and size designation. The shirt remains in excellent++ condition, showing only light signs of wear and two very minor, nearly imperceptible thin spots to the reverse. There are no holes, stains, or mothing. One belt clip tab was field-added during the period to ensure correct belt placement when worn — indicative of actual service use.

Measurements:

  • Collar to bottom: 21½”

  • Armpit to armpit: 23″

  • Shoulder to shoulder: 18″

  • Shoulder to cuff: 23″

An extremely fine, well-preserved, and complete example of a WWII SA Brown Shirt with desirable unit markings and original insignia — an outstanding piece for the advanced collector of early political uniforms.

Historical Description: The brownshirt is perhaps the most iconic political uniform of the Third Reich. The wear of this garment by Nazi organizations predated the 1933 seizure of power, as the SA and other early Party formations adopted this distinctive garment early on. Use of brown cotton uniforms originated with the Freikorps, initially from the use of surplus uniform parts intended for colonial troops in East Africa. By the 1930s the NSDAP brown shirts were common sights throughout the Reich, as these were worn by members of the SA, NSKK, NSFK, Hitlerjugend and other political and paramilitary organizations. The Nazis extended wear of this political uniform to government functionaries at many levels, and these were worn by political leaders. Brown shirts were worn by the early SS and by the SS combat troops during the first part of WWII as well, under the field gray uniform.
