Product Description: This very early NSDAP Armband dates to the Kampfzeit period, before the institution of RZM controls on Nazi regalia. It is a very rare type of armband to find, as few of these were retained into the war years, and fewer still survived. This is a typical cottage industry made product, made with a combination of hand and machine sewing. The swastika is a thin arm type that is typical of this very early period. It is made of black cotton that has been has been hand sewn to a large white roundel. The roundel is machine sewn to the body of the armband, which is made from a thin red fabric that retains bright original color. The long edges of the armband are finished with neat hand stitching, and the short edges are machine sewn together in the back. Inside, there is no tag or marking, which is correct for this early style. This very early NSDAP armband shows light wear and toning, with some expected age discoloration to the white fabric of the roundel. It’s a really interesting piece, that remains in excellent condition.

Armbands were worn on military and civilian uniforms and also on civilian clothes, from suit jackets to work clothing. They were used to denote membership in organizations, to indicate a specific role or function of the bearer, and as insignia of rank. Many organizations would change the design of their armbands over time, which added to the variety produced. These were manufactured in countless variations, ranging from simple printed bands to elaborately hand-embroidered pieces of the highest quality. Some Nazi armbands were worn by all members of large organizations and were made by the millions. Others were intended for use at a specific time and place and were unique. Many types were made in very limited numbers. Some bore metal insignia or special identifiers that indicated the wearer’s rank, unit affiliation, or nationality. Armbands were sometimes but not always marked with ink stamps by the issuing authorities.
