Product Description: This transitional Juncker J1/J2 Observer Badge is a rare and very choice Luftwaffe badge, with a bold, impressive look. This variant of Observer Badge features a first pattern (J1) “thin wreath type” style eagle, mounted on a second pattern (J2) style wreath; these transitional badges by Juncker are less common than standard patterns encountered. The Tombak eagle and large swastika emblem retain about 97 percent of the original silvering, with some very minor wear to the high points that exposes the yellow base metal. The nickel silver wreath has fantastic original finish, which has toned beautifully with age. The reverse of this J1/J2 Observer Badge is nicely maker marked on the reverse of the eagle. The rivets and hardware are all textbook Juncker production. The barrel hinge and round wire pin and catch are intact and functional, with no signs of repair. This outstanding piece remains in a very strong excellent condition.
Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Observer Badge (Beobachterabzeichen) was instituted by Luftwaffe chief Hermann Göring on January 19, 1935. To earn the badge, a member of the Luftwaffe had to have had an observer’s license for two months, or to have participated in five flights over enemy territory, or to have been wounded on a flight. Members of other branches of the Wehrmacht could also be awarded the badge, if the necessary conditions had been met. The badge featured a flying eagle and swastika emblem, affixed to a wreath of laurel and oak leaves. Early examples were made of Tombak or nickel silver, with aluminum used (rarely) later, and finally zinc for wartime badges. A cloth version was also authorized for field use. The badge was worn on the left breast of the uniform. About 35,000 pieces had been awarded by war’s end.
