Product Description: This Tombak Schwerin Destroyer Badge is a desirable, early piece, with great character. It’s made of a single piece of die struck brass alloy (Tombak). The wreath and eagle still retain traces of the original gold gilding in the recesses of the design, and the darkly burnished ship retains most of its factory applied darkening. The obverse shows moderate, honest wear, with lots of detail still evident. There is an extremely light age patina. The reverse of this Tombak Schwerin Destroyer Badge retains nearly all of the original silver finish, and is maker marked in raised lettering with “Schwerin, Berlin 68.” Thehardware setup on this badge is textbook for this variant, with a block hinge, flat wire catch, and round wire retaining hook, all soldered directly to the badge with no repairs. The horizontal banjo pin is functional. This is an extremely appealing and scarce badge, that remains in excellent condition.
Historical Description: The Kriegsmarine Destroyer Badge (Zerstörer-Kriegsarbzeichen was a wartime decoration of the German Navy. It was officially instituted on June 4, 1940 by Kriegsmarine chief Grossadmiral Erich Raeder, and originally was awarded only to crew members of the vessels in Zerstörer-Gruppe Narvik, who met the stipulated criteria. Over the course of the wear, the regulations for awarding this badge were changed several times, expanding the range of sailors who were entitled to the award. Eventually, this badge would be awarded to crews of other destroyers as well as torpedo boats, and several battleships and cruisers that had participated in operations in Norway in 1940. The badge was designed by Paul Casberg of Berlin, and was initially produced in a brass alloy, then later in zinc. A miniature form was also produced for wear on civilian clothes.
