Three Place NSDAP Medal Bar

Condition: Excellent

Product Description: This Three Place NSDAP Medal is a really great example of a set of awards for a member of a Third Reich civil or political organization. The three awards present here are a War Merit Cross 2nd Class without swords, a Hindenburg Cross with swords, and the highlight is an NSDAP 10 year long service medal. The War Merit Cross is a great, early strike, made of a heavy brass alloy, with virtually all of the original bronze finish. The Hindenburg Cross with Swords indicates the owner of this bar was a combatant in WWI, and this is a nice, maker-marked example, with the initials “RSL” on the flat reverse indicating manufacture by Richard Sieper in Lüdenscheid. There is some slight wear to the edges of the obverse of this metal but most of the original finish is still present. The 10-year bronze NSDAP medal has great original finish and luster and shows almost no wear. Each award here is complete with its correct original ribbon, showing only extremely light, even age toning. The reverse of this three place NSDAP medal bar features a metal backing plate with a “Tz” maker mark, with an integral catch and steel pin. The hardware setup is complete, intact and functional. This is a really appealing medal bar, and remains in excellent condition.

Historical Description: The German Military had a long tradition of issuing awards for achievements ranging from long service and participation in specific campaigns, to battlefield valor. Some types of awards were to be pinned on the uniform, others were medals that were suspended from ribbons. On the field uniform, only the ribbons for these medals were to be worn. But for dress uniforms used for parade and walking-out purposes, soldiers wore all of their medals in the form of medal bars that would be pinned to the uniform, on the soldier’s chest. Each medal bar was individually custom made by a tailor or a manufacturer of insignia. They were not issue items, they had to be purchased. These ranged from single mounted awards, to long racks of medals indicating a distinguished career of many years, sometimes with medals from both World Wars or even earlier awards of Imperial Germany. German medal bars were also worn on dress uniforms of civil, political, and paramilitary organizations.
