Product Description: This is a beautiful and very appealing Six Place Medal Bar featuring Imperial orders and awards. The awards included on this rack are a 1914 Iron Cross Second Class, a World War 1 Commemorative “Hindenburg” Cross, an World War 1 Austrian Commemorative Medal with Swords, a Baltic Cross 2nd class, an Austro-Hungarian 1st World War Commemorative Medal and finally an WWI Austrian Imperial Tirol (Tyrol) 1914-1918 Remembrance Medal. The medals all show a pleasant and matching patina, with some nice mellow toning and traces of age and wear. There is no significant damage to any of the medals, and there is lots of original finish here, including original luster to the gilding on the Baltic Cross and virtually all of the original paint on the Iron Cross core. Each medal is complete with its correct original ribbon. The ribbons show strong color, with only minimal age toning to the white fibers. The ribbons are nicely furled and this bar is on the whole very well made. On the reverse, the original long attachment pin and catch assembly is intact and functional. The light gray wool backing is hand sewn as is typical. There are some very small moth nips to the wool. This Six Place Medal Bar is a choice example with great visual appeal. The condition rates as excellent plus overall.

Historical Description: The German Military had a long tradition of issuing awards for achievements ranging from long service and participation in specific campaigns, to battlefield valor. Some types of awards were to be pinned on the uniform, others were medals that were suspended from ribbons. On the field uniform, only the ribbons for these medals were to be worn. But for dress uniforms used for parade and walking-out purposes, soldiers wore all of their medals in the form of medal bars that would be pinned to the uniform, on the soldier’s chest. Each medal bar was individually custom made by a tailor or a manufacturer of insignia. They were not issue items, they had to be purchased. These ranged from single mounted awards, to long racks of medals indicating a distinguished career of many years, sometimes with medals from both World Wars or even earlier awards of Imperial Germany. German medal bars were also worn on dress uniforms of civil, political, and paramilitary organizations.
