Product Description: This single Heer Panzerjäger officers board has great character and a field-worn look. The top of this shoulder board is made of “field” type, matte finish wire braid. It’s affixed to an underlay of bright pink wool, indicating the Panzer branch. It’s for the rank of Leutnant (Lieutenant). The board has a single brass alloy “P” cypher, indicating that the wearer was a member of a Panzerjäger (anti-tank) unit. This cypher retains most of the original gold finish, with some wear to the high points. The cypher is neatly stitched the the strap with a few hand-done stitches. This Panzerjäger officers board shows even, honest wear throughout. The matte wire braid shows some very minor separation, as well as surface wear and age and usage toning. The pink wool retains bright original color. This shoulder board was originally manufactured to be a slip-on type, though the “tongue” has been removed, and this may have been worn like this, as a sew-in shoulder board. This is a desirable example of a scarce shoulder board, in very good condition.

Historical Description: The German military as well as civil, political and paramilitary organizations traditionally used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as uniform insignia, to denote the rank or function of the wearer. After the Nazi rise to power in 1933, there was a tremendous increase in the number of groups and organizations in Germany wearing officially sanctioned uniforms, and most of these organizations used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as a component of their regalia. The exact color of piping utilized, the material color, the type of braid or Tresse that was used, and the number or location of devices and pips present, allow shoulder boards to be tracked to the exact organization that issued them, and often yield even further detail such as the wearer’s rank and even his specific military unit. Normally worn in pairs, the boards were in some cases plain, and in other cases adorned with detailed embroidery or metal emblems. Some shoulder boards were made in the millions, others were specific to a single individual.
