Product Description: This is an extremely desirable SA Sturmfahne Flag, used by the SA Standarte of the 22nd Company of the 218th Regiment of the Stormtroops (Sturmabteilung, or ‘SA’). The identity of the unit to which the flag belonged was determined by the rectangular patch that was sewn to the upper left canton. This patch bore the unit designation (often a combination of numbers or emblems) embroidered on to a backing color that represented the Group, and was an enlarged version of the collar patch worn by that SA unit on the right side of their uniform collars. This impressive SA unit flag measures 53″x 46″ (135cm x 117cm), a great size for display. It is textbook construction, with the body of the flag being made from a typical, fine, thin wool fabric. It is double sided. Each side features a central white roundel with a separately sewn, multi-piece, black swastika emblem. Both sides also feature the unit patch, with white numerals machine stitched to a burgundy backing, surrounded by twisted silver piping that has toned handsomely with age. On the hoist end, this outstanding flag still retains all but one of the original plated clip and loop fittings used to affix this to a pole. The condition of this SA Sturmfahne Flag rates as excellent plus, with some typical age toning and small spots to the white roundels, as well as small moth damages (mostly pinhead sized) throughout the wool fabric. These flags are not at all common. This one could be an impressive centerpiece for a display.
Historical Description: The red flag with white central disk and black swastika was introduced by Hitler in the 1920s as the flag of the National Socialist political party. In 1933, shortly after the Nazis took power, this party flag was recognized alongside the black-white-red Imperial tricolor as one of Germany’s national flags. In 1935, the use of the tricolor flag was discontinued, and between September 1935 and May 8, 1945, the Nazi party flag was the sole national flag of Germany. From its creation in the 1920s through the end of the war, this swastika flag was made and used in endless variations, from the massive banners hung at Party Day rallies to small pennants, bunting flags, and hand-held paper flags distributed along parade routes. These flags, banners and pennants flew from ships, were hung from official and private buildings, and were displayed outside business and private homes. At the end of WWII, the Allied military governments abolished the use of all Nazi symbols, including the national flag. Most Third Reich era German national flags were simply destroyed.
