Product Description: This scarce and very appealing pre WWII SA Brownshirts Great Coat is a textbook example of an early Sturmabteilung (SA) great coat, complete with period-applied insignia.
The jacket is constructed of heavy brown wool, typical of prewar manufacture. Both collar tabs are made of carmine red pink wool cloth formed over stiffeners. The left tab has metal D and crossed flags denoting an equestrian unit. The right tab bears a single metal pip. Each tab is hand-sewn to the collar, as is characteristic of period assembly. The collar itself is neatly edged with pink-and-white woven piping, matching the single shoulder board which features the same carmine-and-white twisted cord set on a pink cloth base — the group color for Staff of Obersten SA Führung or SA top leadership. This shoulder board retains its original paper RZM tag.
Sewn on the left sleeve is a printed NSDAP armband, showing vibrant color with only minimal toning from age. The armband remains securely hand stitched to arm at top and bottom.
The front features two lower pockets, and two rows of metal buttons — all of which all are attached and maker-marked. One button has come loose, but is included in pocket. The great coat has sewn in collar marked “G.F. RFRG Ludwigsburg”. Coat also has 1936 stamped in chest.
This coat remains in excellent++ condition, showing only light wear. There is a little wear on the inside at the center tail split, but wear does not detract from overall displayability.
Measurements:
Collar to bottom: 45″
Armpit to armpit: 19.5″
Shoulder to shoulder: 17″
Shoulder to cuff: 23.5″
An extremely fine, well-preserved, and complete example of a SA Brown Shirt Great Coat with desirable unit markings and original insignia — an outstanding piece for the advanced collector of early political uniforms.
Historical Description: The brownshirt is perhaps the most iconic political uniform of the Third Reich. The wear of this garment by Nazi organizations predated the 1933 seizure of power, as the SA and other early Party formations adopted this distinctive garment early on. Use of brown cotton uniforms originated with the Freikorps, initially from the use of surplus uniform parts intended for colonial troops in East Africa. By the 1930s the NSDAP brown shirts were common sights throughout the Reich, as these were worn by members of the SA, NSKK, NSFK, Hitlerjugend and other political and paramilitary organizations. The Nazis extended wear of this political uniform to government functionaries at many levels, and these were worn by political leaders. Brown shirts were worn by the early SS and by the SS combat troops during the first part of WWII as well, under the field gray uniform.
