Product Description: This is one incredible S Boat Badge! The badge is nearly in mint condition, only a few minor blemishes keep us from being able to label it as “mint”. This S Boat Badge was made out of zinc, it was then coated with a thin copper layer to help the finish of the badge adhere properly. This is one of the reasons this badge has withstood the past seven decades so well while other zinc badges have lost most, if not all, of their original finish. The gold of the badge’s wreath compliments the silver S Boat and darkened waves nicely, giving it the look like the vessel is popping out of the badge. The reverse of the S Boat Badge is marked with an “AS in Triangle”, this maker is still unknown and is referred to by collectors simply as “AS in Triangle”. Both the ball hinge and catch are resting securely in their crimped positions. The thin needle pin is still tightly held in place by the retaining pin running through the ball. Overall this is an excellent S Boat Badge that I have no doubt will look amazing in any Kreigsmarine or Combat Badge Collection.

Historical Description: The S-Boat Badge (Schnellbootkriegsabzeichen) was instituted on May 30, 1941, by Kriegsmarine leader Grossadmiral Erich Raeder. The purpose of this badge was to recognize the achievements and experience of the crews of the fast attack boats, who by that stage of the war had already sunk many British warships and merchant vessels. The design of the badge featured a German S-Boat in action, surrounded by a wreath and surmounted by a German national eagle and swastika emblem. To earn this badge, members of fast attack boat crews had to display exceptional leadership, participate in at least 12 combat missions, or participate in an exceptionally successful mission. The S-Boat Badge could also be awarded to sailors who had earned another decoration on a mission. It was also posthumously awarded to sailors killed in action. In 1943, a new type of this badge was introduced which featured a larger, newer model S-Boat and a larger German eagle.
