Product Description: These Red Cross Leaders Dagger Hangers are a scarce set of accouterments. They are complete, and very nice. The silver wire and red thread woven tape facings, as well as the light brown velvet backing of the straps, are all intact and excellent, showing only minor age and wear, and no fraying or damage. The metal fittings are made of aluminum, and all of the clips and buckles are complete and functional. The aluminum fittings show light age, with a mild, even patina. All of the spring clips remain intact, with two clips that would connect to the suspension bands on a dagger scabbard, and a larger clip at the other end, for affixing the hangers to a uniform. The clips that would affix these to the dagger show slight wear with some finish loss. There are no manufacturer markings. Overall, these hard to find Red Cross Leaders Dagger Hangers are in excellent condition, perfect for completing a dagger.
Historical Description: As with all civil, political and paramilitary organizations during the Third Reich, the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz (German Red Cross) had uniforms and regalia for formal and ceremonial wear. The first formal uniforms for the DRK were introduced in 1935, and in 1938, new formal edged weapons were introduced, including the Red Cross Leaders Dagger, which was intended for wear by officials with the rank of Wachtführer (an NCO in charge of a guard) and above. The Geneva Convention stipulated that medical personnel could not be armed, so the Leaders Dagger was not intended to be functional, but rather purely ceremonial. Production of these Red Cross leaders daggers ceased in 1940, and the short production run, coupled with the relatively small size of the organization, resulted in relatively few of these daggers being produced. As a result, they are rare today, and very sought after by collectors.
