Product Description: This Puma German Fighting Knife is a desirable piece, with loads of character and a great “field” look. The cast steel blade has been sharpened along the edge, as is very commonly seen with field-used pieces. It has also been buffed or cleaned at some point in the past. The blade ricasso is nicely stamped with “Gusstahl” (cast steel) and the maker, Puma in Solingen. The original leather buffer pad is intact. The handle is nice, and complete, with no chips or cracks to the attractive Bakelite grip. The handle rivets show no sign of ever having been messed with. This Puma German fighting knife is complete with its original steel scabbard. The metal clip on the scabbard is intact and functional. There are no dents to the scabbard, though most of the original painted finish has worn away. This knife shows honest wear and use, but remains complete and sound, and in excellent condition overall.

Historical Description: The typical German fighting knife of the World Wars was a conventional, general purpose knife, sturdily made, with a full tang and slab grips, and a steel scabbard. The blade length was about 6 inches long. Between 1914 and 1918, there were many makers of these knives, known as “Grabenmesser” (trench knives). Wooden handles were common, and most had a leather belt loop on the scabbard. Some of these knives were privately purchased by the soldiers, while others were issued items. There were many variations, including stag grips, solid metal handles, and even some with offset handles and slots that allowed them to be fixed to rifles, bayonet style.
