Product Description: This is an outstanding and beautifully preserved set of Panzergrenadier Oberleutnant insignia, consisting of matching slip-on shoulder boards and collar tabs. The shoulder boards are constructed with a finely executed silver aluminum braid, crisply interwoven over a dark green wool underlay and bordered with vivid apple green waffenfarbe piping, denoting the Panzergrenadier branch. One gilt pip is affixed to each board, indicating the rank of Oberleutnant. The construction is textbook, with tightly woven braid and pristine stitching throughout, suggesting these were never issued or worn.
The matching collar tabs are equally impressive, featuring hand-embroidered silver-grey litzen, neatly executed on a dark green wool backing. Each tab displays two central bars rendered in apple green thread, in keeping with the branch color and perfectly aligned with the officer’s rank and assignment. The tabs are backed with original buckram stiffeners, which remain firm and intact, further attesting to the set’s superb preservation.
The Panzergrenadier Slip-On Shoulder Boards & Collar Tabs are in mint, unissued condition, exhibiting no signs of wear, moth damage, or soiling. The vivid colors, sharp embroidery, and flawless materials make this set not only an outstanding example of Panzergrenadier officer insignia but also a highly desirable display piece. It would be exceedingly difficult to find a better-preserved set, making this a prime opportunity for the advanced collector or museum-grade display.
Historical Description: The German military as well as civil, political and paramilitary organizations traditionally used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as uniform insignia, to denote the rank or function of the wearer. After the Nazi rise to power in 1933, there was a tremendous increase in the number of groups and organizations in Germany wearing officially sanctioned uniforms, and most of these organizations used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as a component of their regalia. The exact color of piping utilized, the material color, the type of braid or Tresse that was used, and the number or location of devices and pips present, allow shoulder boards to be tracked to the exact organization that issued them, and often yield even further detail such as the wearer’s rank and even his specific military unit. Normally worn in pairs, the boards were in some cases plain, and in other cases adorned with detailed embroidery or metal emblems. Some shoulder boards were made in the millions, others were specific to a single individual.
