Panzer Officer Visor Cap

Product Description:  This is a phenomenal example of an extremely desirable Panzer Officer Visor Cap, preserved in remarkable condition and rating at Excellent plus. The body of this fine-quality private purchase cap is crafted from exceptionally fine gray-green wool with a felted, “doeskin” texture. There are only a few small moth tracking on the top. It features the standard dark green cap band used by the German Army, along with three rows of wool piping in pink, denoting the Panzer branch. The cap retains its vibrant original color and original aluminum insignia, including the second pattern Army eagle, showing only minor age toning. There are no extra holes or signs that the insignia have ever been removed. The bullion chin cord is complete and flawless, while the Vulkanfiber visor remains pristine, preserving its original luster.

Inside, the cap bears the marking “Stirndruckfrei Deutsches Reichspatent” (“Forehead pressure free, German Imperial Patent”). The dome of the cap has small piece of paper with “jhle” identifying the owner.  Though there are no maker’s marks, the inside of the leather sweatband is size-stamped “57” and shows light discoloration from wear and age. Sweatband looks to have an inch or so of period repair to the inner right side where the visor brim meets the liner. The interior lining is made of the textbook pale yellow artificial silk material typical of high-quality examples. Overall, this Panzer Officer Visor Cap stands as an outstanding, benchmark piece for any serious collector.

Historical Description: The visor cap (Schirmmütze) was an important part of the headgear worn by German uniformed military, civil, paramilitary and political organizations during the Third Reich. This was the standard cloth headgear worn as a part of the service uniform. Visor caps were worn outdoors as well as indoors, and were often required to be worn by all personnel on duty. Visor caps were made in versions specific to each organization and were often further differentiated through the use of insignia, colored piping, or style of chin cord, to indicate rank, role or branch. The insignia used on these caps ranged from simple stamped metal emblems, to elaborate hand embroidery. Visor caps were issued to enlisted soldiers and NCOs in the military and in some other organizations. Officers had to purchase their own hats, and lower ranks could choose to purchase caps that were of a higher quality than the rather basic, issue examples. The private purchase caps were generally made in very high quality, with fine materials. A wide variety of fabrics were used, from Trikot and doeskin, to heavy wool, or even lightweight white fabric for summer wear. In the military, issue of these caps was generally suspended shortly after the outbreak of the war, but they continued to be worn by some troops until the end of the war.
