Panzer NCO Shoulder Straps

Condition: Excellent

Branch: Heer / Panzer / Panzerjäger

Sold

Product Description: This pair of Panzer NCO Shoulder Straps is an interesting set. They have matching, silver finish “6” cyphers indicating Panzer-Regiment 6, part of the 3. Panzer-Division which fought on both the Western and Eastern fronts. Both straps have matching wear, and they appear to possibly have been worn as a pair, but they are not perfectly matching, with a number of small differences. The base material is made of slightly different shades of typical wartime field gray wool, and each board has a single rank pip, with one being zinc based and the other brass based. Both straps are adorned with wartime type subdued rayon rank Tresse, which together with the pip indicates the NCO rank of Feldwebel. The boards have pink rayon Waffenfarbe piping, for the desirable Panzer branch. The construction on the underside of these Panzer NCO shoulder straps is textbook, with corded keyhole buttonholes and twill reinforcement on the slip-on tongues. These straps would look great on a tunic or greatcoat, and display very well as is. They are in a strong excellent condition.

Historical Description: The German military as well as civil, political and paramilitary organizations traditionally used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as uniform insignia, to denote the rank or function of the wearer. After the Nazi rise to power in 1933, there was a tremendous increase in the number of groups and organizations in Germany wearing officially sanctioned uniforms, and most of these organizations used shoulder straps and shoulder boards as a component of their regalia. The exact color of piping utilized, the material color, the type of braid or Tresse that was used, and the number or location of devices and pips present, allow shoulder boards to be tracked to the exact organization that issued them, and often yield even further detail such as the wearer’s rank and even his specific military unit. Normally worn in pairs, the boards were in some cases plain, and in other cases adorned with detailed embroidery or metal emblems. Some shoulder boards were made in the millions, others were specific to a single individual.
