Product Description: Ottoman Empire (Turkey) Order of the Medjidie (Early 1900s) with Ribbon and Original Presentation Box. A fine and rare example of the Order of the Medjidie, dating from the early 20th century, awarded by the Ottoman Empire. This distinguished decoration is presented with its original ribbon and ornate presentation box. The medal itself is in very good condition, showcasing a pleasing patina consistent with age, and retains sharp detail throughout. The original ribbon remains in excellent shape overall, showing only a minor area of thinning that does not detract from its overall presentation. The presentation box is a highlight—crafted in a luxurious rich purple velvet, it features the Ottoman coat of arms prominently on the lid. A small functional latch is affixed to the front. The interior is lined in original cloth, showing modest wear and thinning consistent with age and handling, but still structurally intact. A rare and collectible piece, especially complete with its original components, offering both historical significance and aesthetic appeal.
Historical Description: The Order of the Medjidie (or Mecidiye) was established in 1851 by Sultan Abdulmejid I of the Ottoman Empire as a means of formally recognizing exceptional service to the state. It was awarded in five classes, ranging from the Fifth Class to the Grand Cross (First Class), and could be conferred upon both Ottoman citizens and foreigners. The order quickly gained international prominence during the Crimean War (1853–1856), when it was bestowed upon numerous British, French, and allied military officers for their support of the Ottoman cause against Russia. Its design reflects a blend of Ottoman imperial symbolism and European aesthetic influences, often produced by both the Imperial Mint in Constantinople and foreign jewelers. The order could be awarded for both civil and military merit, with crossed swords added to the insignia to denote military distinction. Over time, the Order of the Medjidie became a respected decoration not only within the empire but also abroad, symbolizing both personal achievement and the increasingly international relationships of the late Ottoman state.
