Officer SS Sanitäts-Abteilung 36 Cufftitle – Vet added Skulls

Product Description: This Officer SS Sanitäts-Abteilung 36 Cufftitle is an incredible veteran souvenir object. The cuff title itself is an extremely scarce and desirable piece, with a textbook machine woven band and exquisitely hand-embroidered lettering in bullion wire. The embroidery is nice and tight, with a typical thin fabric backing. The bullion shows no damage or oxidation, with only a very slight age patina and one area with some slight soiling. This cuff title has been adorned with three SS cap skulls, and two early type SS cap buttons. It is most likely that these were added by the US veteran who took this piece as a souvenir. The skulls are very nice, Deschler made examples, with the RZM M1/52 marking on the reverse. One of the skulls shows slight wear, revealing some of the base metal, while the other two skulls retain nearly all of the original finish and appear unworn. Each skull retains both of the original metal prongs, which pass through the cuff title, holding the skulls in place. Each end of the cuff title is decorated with a scarce SS cap button as used on SS-VT field caps. The buttons have never been painted and still have full original detail and beautiful luster. The buttons are affixed to the cuff title through small holes for the button shanks, and are retained with original steel S-rings. The reverse of the buttons are marked with the round RZM logo. The condition of this extremely desirable set is excellent, with only some very slight soiling to the band in small areas. This Officer SS Sanitäts-Abteilung 36 Cufftitle is an absolutely choice piece, totally unique and extremely evocative.

Historical Description: Cuff titles (Ärmelstreifen) are uniform accoutrements that have been used in the German military since the 19th century. Intended to foster a certain sense of ‘esprit de corps’ amongst members of the armed forces, they were authorized for wear by members of designated units for the duration of their service time within that unit. In the event of transfer out of the unit, the cuff title was to be removed from the service member’s uniform. During the Third Reich, the German military continued this tradition by instituting honorary cuff titles to certain ‘special’ formations. This practice is perhaps most well-known for its application amongst Waffen- ϟϟ units. Cufftitles were also authorized for wear within all branches of the Wehrmacht (Army, Air Force and Navy) as well. These unit-specific cuff titles are not to be confused with others which were awarded for participation in a certain campaigns. The tradition within the German military of wearing cuff titles continues into the 21st century with certain honor guard contingents of the Bundeswehr being permitted to wear unit-specific cuff titles.
