Product Description: This is a particularly attractive and well-preserved NSV Door Plaque – Gau Köln-Aachen—an iconic emblem once displayed on the homes of members of the Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (NSV), the German Social Welfare organization responsible for civilian aid. These plaques served an important function during the war, designating households where neighbors could seek assistance, guidance, or information.

This circular plaque measures 76 mm in diameter and is struck in Tombak. The original silver finish has worn away, allowing the underlying metal to show through and develop a rich, even, deeply appealing patina.

The reverse shows a heavy, untouched patina consistent with age and outdoor use. Overall, this NSV Member’s Door ID Plaque remains in excellent condition and displays beautifully.

Historical Description: The Nationalsozialistische Volkswohlfahrt (NSV), or National Socialist People’s Welfare, was one of the largest social organizations in Nazi Germany. Founded in the early 1930s and expanded rapidly after 1933, the NSV was presented by the regime as a charitable institution dedicated to supporting families, children, and the economically vulnerable. In practice, its programs—such as maternal care centers, child nurseries, and winter aid drives—were designed to reinforce Nazi ideology by linking welfare benefits to political loyalty and racial criteria. Assistance was offered selectively, with “racially desirable” Germans prioritized while others, including Jews and many political opponents, were systematically excluded.

By the mid-1930s, the NSV had become an important tool of social control, embedding Nazi principles into everyday life under the guise of public welfare. It absorbed or displaced many independent charitable groups, centralizing social services under the authority of the regime. Beyond distributing aid, the organization promoted propaganda emphasizing duty to the Volksgemeinschaft, or “people’s community,” using welfare work to cultivate conformity and support for state policies. The NSV remained active throughout World War II, administering relief for bombed-out civilians and evacuees, though always within the discriminatory and ideological framework that defined Nazi governance.
