NSKOV Funeral Sash Roundel

Condition: Excellent

Product Description: This NSKOV Funeral Sash Roundel has a great look, and makes for an eye-catching display. It is made of a thin white fabric, with a visible weave, neatly cut into a circle. It is printed with a bold-looking and detailed version of the wreathed sword, cross and swastika organizational emblem of the NSKOV (NS-Kriegsopferversorgung), the Nazi organization for aiding WWI widows and orphans, and other war victims. The printing is executed in crisp, black ink. There are no stitch holes or any other indication of this ever having been sewn to a funeral sash, though there is some minor fraying on one edge. On the reverse, there is slight bleed through of the black ink printing. This NSKOV funeral sash roundel shows typical age toning to the white fabric, and some very light spotting. The condition rates as excellent.

Historical Description: The use of wreaths with customized sashes for display at funerals is a tradition with deep roots in Germany. During the Third Reich, these sashes were manufactured to show tributes from all types of civil, political, military and paramilitary organizations. These wreaths and sashes were used to honor deceased members of various organizations and also to show respect for important people. Not only organizations had funeral sashes, but even people in specific roles also had their own sashes for funeral wreaths, up to Adolf Hitler himself. The quality of these sashes varied, with most being rather simply made, and intended to be disposable, though the funeral wreaths sent by high ranking officials were of a quality befitting their status in the Reich. Though there was of course an increase in funerals during the war, the vast majority of funeral sashes were destroyed or simply discarded. Surviving examples are collected for their historical value as pieces of Nazi German tradition and culture.
