Product Description: This NSKOV Funeral Sash Roundel is a bold-looking piece of cloth, in outstanding condition. It was intended to be sewn on the sash of a wreath delivered to a funeral as a tribute from the NSKOV, the Nazi organization for aiding WWI widows and orphans and other German war victims. It’s made of a thin white fabric with a visible weave, printed with the impressive wreathed sword and swastika NSKOV organizational emblem in black ink. The printing is simply but crisply done, as is typical. On the reverse, the ink has bled through and is visible. This NSKOV funeral sash roundel was never used; there are no stitch holes or other traces of having been affixed to anything. It is very clean, and shows only extremely minimal age toning to the white fabric. The condition is near mint.
Historical Description: The use of wreaths with customized sashes for display at funerals is a tradition with deep roots in Germany. During the Third Reich, these sashes were manufactured to show tributes from all types of civil, political, military and paramilitary organizations. These wreaths and sashes were used to honor deceased members of various organizations and also to show respect for important people. Not only organizations had funeral sashes, but even people in specific roles also had their own sashes for funeral wreaths, up to Adolf Hitler himself. The quality of these sashes varied, with most being rather simply made, and intended to be disposable, though the funeral wreaths sent by high ranking officials were of a quality befitting their status in the Reich. Though there was of course an increase in funerals during the war, the vast majority of funeral sashes were destroyed or simply discarded. Surviving examples are collected for their historical value as pieces of Nazi German tradition and culture.
