First Pattern NSKK Crash Helmet Eagle

Maker Marked: M1/78

Product Description: This is a great example of the very desirable and hard to find first pattern NSKK crash helmet eagle. It’s a very large eagle, in the early political style, made of stamped metal that has been plated with a silver finish. The original finish shows minor wear and age, and is over 95 percent present on the front. The swastika retains nearly all of its original black paint. The reverse of this NSKK crash helmet eagle has 3 sets of brass alloy prongs, which show some bends, presumably from having been used to affix this to a crash helmet. The lower pair of prongs is intact and complete, the upper sets are each about half there. On the rear of the helmet plate it is maker marked M1/78. There is some verdigris and typical age patina to the reverse. This eagle is deeply curved, contoured to fit the front of the iconic NSKK leather crash helmet. This NSKK crash helmet eagle is a very impressive piece of regalia, with a striking look, and remains in excellent overall condition.

Historical Description: The National Socialist Motor Corps (Nationalsozialistisches Kraftfahrkorps, or NSKK) was a Nazi paramilitary organization that conducted training in the operation of motorcycles and automobiles, and also transported Nazi Party and SA personnel. It was founded in 1931, as a successor to the National Socialist Automobile Corps. The organization and ranks in the NSKK were similar to that of the SA. It focused on fitness in motoring skills, including maintenance and use of both military and civilian vehicles. NSKK members assisted with traffic direction, as well as the transportation of personnel involved with constructing the bunker system on Germany’s western frontier. Starting with the outbreak of war in 1939, the NSKK assisted the German armed forces, providing infrastructural support. As with most uniformed organizations in the Third Reich, the NSKK had a myriad of specific regalia and insignia, each with its own distinct purpose and meaning.
