Product Description: This near mint Gravity Knife is a wonderful example, one of the finest we have ever owned. The condition is extraordinary. The blade on this one is gorgeous, with nearly all of the original factory crossgraining, and full original luster. The blade is nicely etched with the early commercial style manufacturer logo of the firm of SMF in Solingen. The wooden grip scales on this knife are extremely appealing, with a “tiger stripe” like appearance to the grain, and a fine, dark patina throughout. The metal parts are nicely marked, with matching “697” serial numbers and a “Luftamt 5” Luftwaffe acceptance stamp on the spike. This near mint gravity knife is complete, all-original, and functions beautifully, as it did when it was new. There is no damage to note, and virtually no wear. These knives are not at all easy to find in this condition.
Historical Description: The “Flieger-Kappmesser” (Flyer’s Jackknife) was introduced by the German Luftwaffe in 1937. Although this knife has become indelibly linked with German paratroopers, it was in fact intended for issue to all Luftwaffe air crew. This iconic WWII German knife had a distinctive look, with wooden grips and a four inc, gravity propelled, locking blade, as well as a spike which could be used to pick apart knots. The trousers issued to members of Fallschirmjäger units were outfitted with a special pocket intended for carrying this important tool, which in the reality of war, could also be used as a fighting weapon. In 1943, a second, “takedown” form of this knife appeared, with features which allowed for the easy disassembly of the knife for cleaning and maintenance. Both types of this Luftwaffe Gravity Knife (as these are known to collectors) were produced by multiple factories, and exist in multiple variations, making them appealing to collectors. They are desirable items that are sought-after today.
