Product Description: This cased Assmann ROAG Badge is an outstanding and choice set, that we are very pleased to be able to offer. The badge itself is fantastic and beautiful, and is an early piece, made of a brass alloy (Tombak). The wreath retains virtually all of the original high quality electroplated silver finish, with lovely gleam to the burnished highlights. There is some expected age toning in some small areas, as well as lots of original luster. The eagle features all of the classic Assmann bluish darkening. The detail is really nice, and there is little or no evident wear. The reverse of this badge is nearly perfect, with only extremely slight signs of age. The back of the eagle is stamped with the stylized “A” maker mark of Assmann. The hardware is functional and unrepaired, and is textbook for this maker, with full original darkening to the round wire pin. This gorgeous badge is housed in a near mint original case. The exterior of the case presents full original color, and virtually all of the original surface is intact, with only extremely slight wear. The German designation of the award on the lid shows normal age toning to the gold lettering. Inside, the case is clean and pristine, with no damage to the silk. The deep color of the flocked insert displays the badge beautifully. This cased Assmann ROAG Badge would be very difficult to ever upgrade. The condition rates as near mint throughout.

Historical Description: The Luftwaffe Radio Operators Badge (Bordfunkerabzeichen) was instituted by the head of the Luftwaffe, Hermann Goering, in 1935. It featured a German eagle clutching two lightning bolts, surrounded by a wreath with the German swastika at the bottom. The badge was awarded to all Luftwaffe radio operators at the conclusion of their training, upon issue of a certificate from a flight school authorizing them to serve as radio operators. In this sense, it was a trade badge of trained radio operators, rather than being an individual award for military achievement, though it could also be issued prior to the conclusion of training by personnel who flew operational missions. With the annexation of Austria, the Luftwaffe Radio Operators Badge was also issued to Austrian radio operators taken into the German armed forces.
