Product Description:  A fine and complete example of the Model 1889 (M89) Prussian Infantry Officer Sword, produced by the esteemed Solingen firm Carl Eickhorn, and featuring the distinctive folding clamshell guard associated with Imperial officer rank. Retaining its original portepee, this well-preserved sword displays honest age and patina throughout. The 28.5-inch blade remains bright, showing expected wear from field use, including areas of finish loss and rubbing, with the desirable double squirrel Eickhorn trademark clearly visible on the ricasso. The original leather washer and loop remain intact, and the grip retains its full complement of gilt triple wire bands, firmly in place. The sword measures 34.5 inches overall, with a total length of 36 inches when in the scabbard.

The matching steel scabbard shows paint loss from age and handling but is free from major dents or structural compromise, and houses the sword securely. The folding guard remains fully functional, a hallmark of this officer-grade model. Also retains leather and bullion portepee that remains in excellent condition with minor wear.  A highly attractive and honest example of the Imperial Prussian M89 Officer’s Sword, ideal for collectors of German militaria or historical edged weapons, offering authenticity, condition, and character in equal measure.

Historical Description: The long history of military swords stretches back to ancient times. Swords were used as weapons in battle, and were also used to administer punishments including non-surgical amputation, and decapitation. Swords were carried by soldiers and by civilians as well, with some cultures restricting sword use to members of the nobility. In the 16th and 17th centuries, other types of weapon technology, such as firearms, began to be introduced. Around this same time, many European militaries began to formalize the patterns of swords carried by their soldiers, with regulations on the details of these weapons. Eventually, the sword became, primarily, a self-defense weapon; by the early 19th century, even this role was waning. Despite this, swords were still often carried in combat by officers and cavalry units throughout the 19th century and into the 20th century. By the 1930s, swords in most militaries had a purely ceremonial function, as part of the regalia of a soldier or officer. Military swords were often manufactured to very high quality standards, by skilled craftsmen. Today, antique military swords are popular collectibles.
