Product Description:  Luftwaffe Flight Officer Fliegerbluse Tunic — A refined and highly collectible example of a German Air Force service garment, this Luftwaffe Flight Officer Fliegerbluse Tunic exemplifies the understated elegance and tailored sophistication associated with Luftwaffe officer attire during the Second World War. Originally issued as an enlisted pattern, the piece reflects a period officer upgrade, evidenced by the addition of Leutnant rank collar tabs and finely sewn-in shoulder straps, enhancing both its visual presence and historical interest.

Constructed in the characteristic blue-gray wool, the tunic features two neatly aligned loops to the breast, intended for the Iron Cross First Class (EK1) and, below, a Pilot’s Badge—details that underscore its association with flight personnel. The interior is stamped with sizing and manufacturing information, including the maker’s mark “Ernst Koschel Köln,” alongside a faint, partially legible unit marking, further contributing to its authenticity and research potential.

The tunic is tailored to a trim silhouette, measuring approximately 23 inches from collar to tail, 18 inches armpit to armpit, and 25 inches from shoulder seam to cuff. Condition is near mint, with only minimal signs of handling, presenting exceptionally well for both display and advanced collection.

As a classic representation of Luftwaffe officer dress, this Luftwaffe Flight Officer Fliegerbluse Tunic offers collectors a compelling combination of rarity, condition, and historical resonance, particularly appealing to those focused on aviation-related militaria and elite wartime uniforms.

Historical Description: The Luftwaffe, the air force of the German military during the Third Reich, was established in 1935. Over the next 10 years, Luftwaffe troops wore a huge variety of uniforms. Enlisted men generally wore uniforms issued from military depots. Most enlisted soldiers had wool trousers and a short jacket with two internal lower pockets, called a Fliegerbluse, as well as a dressier 4-pocket tunic, the Tuchrock. Officers wore the same general uniform styles, but as officers had to supply their own uniforms, they usually wore tailor made versions. There were also myriad varieties of specialized uniforms worn by certain units or in specific situations, from the tuxedo-style “gala” formal wear uniform of the pre-war period, to the plain coveralls worn by crews of anti-aircraft cannons. There were work uniforms, tropical and summer uniforms, and camouflage clothing for airborne troops and other Luftwaffe soldiers in ground combat. Flight crews had their own specialized gear, including leather jackets and warm, electrically heated suits. Most but not all Luftwaffe uniform jackets bore the Luftwaffe emblem of a flying eagle holding a swastika.
