Product Description: This Luftwaffe Combat Boot Knife or “Stiefelmesser” is a really nice example. The blade is near perfect, with only normal runner marks from being in and out of the sheath. The ricasso is neatly stamped with the maker mark “W.” The handle is beautiful, with perfect wooden grip scales that show very appealing light honey tones, and virtually no age. The steel crossguard and grip retaining rivets show only a very light patina. The original steel sheath retains nearly all of the original glossy black enamel painted finish, with only very slight traces of handling wear. All three of the prongs that would have been used to affix this to a boot, belt or uniform part are intact, with no issues. This Luftwaffe Combat Boot Knife is a choice piece, in outstanding, excellent plus plus condition.
Historical Description: The typical German fighting knife of the World Wars was a conventional, general purpose knife, sturdily made, with a full tang and slab grips, and a steel scabbard. The blade length was about 6 inches long. Between 1914 and 1918, there were many makers of these knives, known as “Grabenmesser” (trench knives). Wooden handles were common, and most had a leather belt loop on the scabbard. Some of these knives were privately purchased by the soldiers, while others were issued items. There were many variations, including stag grips, solid metal handles, and even some with offset handles and slots that allowed them to be fixed to rifles, bayonet style.
