Historical Description:  Troddels (also known as Faustriemen) were decorative knots attached to the hilts of edged weapons—primarily bayonets and dress swords—used by German military forces before and during World War II. Originally introduced in the 19th century, their primary function evolved from practical identification markers for enlisted men to symbols of unit designation, rank, and tradition within the German armed forces.

In the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe, troddels served a dual role: they added a ceremonial flair to a soldier’s appearance and provided a visual code indicating the bearer’s unit affiliation. The color combinations of the stem, slide, and acorn (the woven knot at the bottom) corresponded to specific battalions and companies within a regiment. For example, a white acorn with a red crown and slide, combined with a blue stem, would signify a soldier from the 1st Company of the 1st Battalion. These knots were typically worn on dress bayonets or parade daggers, and although largely ornamental by WWII, they remained a valued part of military tradition and a point of pride for the soldier.
