Luftschutz Special Detail Armband

Product Description: This Luftschutz Special Detail Armband is a great example with a lot of character. This pattern of armband was worn by members of the German national air raid defense organization, assigned to special details. It is among the more rare of the various patterns of armbands used by specialized Luftschutz personnel. It is made out of a thin and rather coarsely woven blue fabric, which still retains its original deep blue color, and is finished at the upper and lower edges with double rows of machine stitching. It is also finished at the back, and is in a slightly small size, possibly indicating it may have been worn by a female or youth member of the RLB. The front of this Luftschutz Special Detail Armband bears a Latin letter “S” in white fabric, zig-zag machine stitched to the armband. As is typical with these Luftschutz armbands, there are no manufacturer or issue markings. This one looks to have been actually worn, and shows very slight traces of wear and age. It remains in excellent condition overall.

Armbands were worn on military and civilian uniforms and also on civilian clothes, from suit jackets to work clothing. They were used to denote membership in organizations, to indicate a specific role or function of the bearer, and as insignia of rank. Many organizations would change the design of their armbands over time, which added to the variety produced. These were manufactured in countless variations, ranging from simple printed bands to elaborately hand-embroidered pieces of the highest quality. Some Nazi armbands were worn by all members of large organizations and were made by the millions. Others were intended for use at a specific time and place and were unique. Many types were made in very limited numbers. Some bore metal insignia or special identifiers that indicated the wearer’s rank, unit affiliation, or nationality. Armbands were sometimes but not always marked with ink stamps by the issuing authorities.
