Product Description: This Kriegsmarine High Seas Fleet Badge by Schwerin is a well-worn original piece. The badge is made of a die struck Tombak base metal, with a slight vaulting applied in the factory. The badge has most likely been cleaned heavily long ago, as none of the original bright fire gilding remains. Only the ship retains some of its original dark burnishing. The obverse of this attractive badge shows a light, even age patina. Honest wear is evident, but much original detail remains. The reverse of this Kriegsmarine High Seas Fleet Badge is maker marked “Fec. Adolf Bock, Ausf. Schwerin Berlin” in raised lettering. The hardware is textbook Schwerin hardware, with a block hinge, banjo pin and sheet metal catch. The hinge and catch are soldered in place, with no indication of any repairs. The attachment pin is functional. This is a desirable, early badge, in very good plus condition.

Historical Description: The High Seas Fleet War Badge was instituted on April 30th by Großadmiral Erich Raeder. The institution of the award was to recognize the actions of personnel serving on German Battleships and Cruisers, first during the naval battles against England, and later the naval battles against any enemy countries. Awarding criteria varied from twelve weeks of active service on a battleship or cruiser, good conduct, posthumously while serving aboard vessel, or for the sinking of the sailor’s ship from under him.
