Product Description: This Japanese Gunto with Combat Cover is a very desirable sword, with fantastic character. This is a military sword, intended for field use; it is in “Army mounts” with a leather “combat” cover over the sheath. The gorgeous blade measures 27 inches long, with a vibrant and cloud-like “Hamon” that can be easily seen throughout the entire length of the blade. The blade is uncleaned and mostly very bright, with only a few scattered light marks. There are no chips or damage to the cutting edge. Under the grip, the tang of the blade is signed by the manufacturer in Japanese characters. This Japanese Gunto with Combat Cover is complete, with all of the original handle fittings intact. All of the original brown cord handle wrapping remains present, still tightly bound around the original ray skin. The sword locks nicely into the scabbard. The original scabbard for this Gunto is a typical, drab painted Army style. The scabbard has a fantastic leather “combat cover” that covers nearly all of the exterior. This brown leather cover retains most of the original surface, with even wear and a lovely, old patina. The cover is neatly hand stitched in place along the entire length of the scabbard. The original suspension ring on the scabbard is intact, and is complete with an original surrender tag. The tag is made of thin linen or cotton fabric, with hand lettering in Japanese characters, and even age toning. This sword has an awesome “field” look and remains in excellent condition.

Historical Description: The Imperial Japanese Army numbered 1,700,000 soldiers in 1941. By August 1945, this number had swelled to 6,095,000 men. During the course of the war, these men were sent to areas of operations that spanned a huge part of the globe, including the Mongolian border, Hong Kong, the Phillipines. Thailand, Burma, Dutch East Indies, and Malaya. These soldiers were issued a wide variety of uniform and equipment items. They had specialized footwear, helmets and other headgear, and different types of uniforms intended for the varying (and often extreme) climates in which Japanese soldiers fought. As with all of the major combatants of WWII, the Japanese also had special insignia to identify ranks and roles of individual soldiers, as well as decorations to reward soldiers for their service and achievements. American soldiers who fought in the Pacific Theater avidly sought Japanese items as souvenirs, and they collected not only flags, weapons and helmets, but items of personal equipment and even personal items of Japanese soldiers. Today, all aspects of WWII Japanese Army uniforms, insignia, equipment, and awards, remain collectible historic items.
