Historical Description: Although often overlooked in discussions of World War I, Siam (modern-day Thailand) played a notable role in the Allied war effort. In July 1917, Siam became the only Southeast Asian nation to formally join the Allies, declaring war on Germany and Austria-Hungary. This decision was driven by several factors, including a desire to assert its sovereignty on the world stage, strengthen diplomatic ties with Western powers, and secure its position in postwar global affairs.

Following its declaration of war, Siam took active measures to support the Allies. German and Austrian nationals in Siam were interned, their assets were seized, and German-owned businesses and ships were requisitioned. More significantly, in 1918, Siam dispatched an expeditionary force of approximately 1,300 personnel, including pilots, mechanics, and medical staff, to France. Siamese troops trained alongside French forces, with their aviation unit participating in flight operations, while medical teams assisted in treating wounded soldiers.

Siam’s contributions earned it a place at the Paris Peace Conference of 1919, where it became a signatory of the Treaty of Versailles. As a result, Siam secured its national sovereignty, gained recognition as an emerging international power, and obtained the removal of extraterritorial rights previously held by Western nations within its borders.

To commemorate the participation of all Allied nations, the Inter-Allied Victory Medal was issued in 1919, with each country producing a version featuring a shared theme but distinct national designs. The Siamese Victory Medal follows the general pattern of the series, with the allegorical figure of Victory on the obverse, sculpted by French artist Charles-Frédéric Vernon, symbolizing peace and triumph. The reverse bears the universal inscription, “The Great War for Civilization 1914–1919,” surrounded by the flags of the Allied nations, including Siam.

This rare and historically significant medal serves as a lasting tribute to Siam’s courageous commitment to the Allied cause and its emergence as an independent force in international diplomacy.
