Product Description: This Imperial U-boat Badge is a beautiful example, with outstanding character and charm. It is made of brass. Most of the original gilt finish has been lost to time and wear, and the award has mostly reverted to the more muted gold color of the base metal. Honest wear has left some tiny scattered surface marks. Loads of original detail remains. The badge sports a very nice, uncleaned, old patina, with some green build-up in recesses that creates appealing contrast. The reverse of this lovely Imperial U-boat Badge is flat, with a slight texture to the surface. There is no maker mark. The hardware setup is intact and functional, with no repairs, and features a horizontal round wire pin, with a soldered block hinge and round wire catch. The overall look of this badge is of an all-original, uncleaned, uniform-worn award. The condition rates as excellent.

Historical Description: The U-Boat Badge (U-Boots-Kriegsabzeichen) was instituted on October 13, 1939 by Kriegsmarine leader Grossadmiral Erich Raeder, to recognize the combat achievements of the extremely dangerous and all-volunteer U-Boat service. The design of the badge features a German submarine surrounded by a wreath, surmounted by a German national eagle and swastika emblem. The original design for the badge, submitted by Kriegsmarine sailors, was refined by Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus. To earn this badge, submarine sailors had to participate in a minimum of two missions against the enemy. If a sailor was wounded on a single mission, he could receive the U-Boat Badge. The badge could be worn both on and off duty. A total of 9,536 U-Boat Badges were awarded during WWII.
