Product Description: This Imperial Stag Grip Hunting Cutlass has outstanding visual appeal. The blade is made of nickel plated steel that has been acid etched with an intricate floral pattern. The blade is bright, with no pitting. The etching does not show strong darkening, and it is possible that this blade was lightly cleaned at some point. The handle is gorgeous, with a desirable stag grip that shows no damage and only minimal age patina. The brass handle fittings are in nice condition with a mellow patina that matches the grip. This Imperial Stag Grip Hunting Cutlass is complete with its original scabbard. The scabbard is extremely well preserved, with about 95 percent of the original factory applied glossy black paint finish still intact, and no dents to the scabbard body. The brass drag and throat with frog lug show smooth, clean surfaces, with no damage. This cutlass is a really nice looking piece. It’s in excellent condition.

Historical Description: Hunting is a sport with a long tradition in Germany. As with any long tradition, it grew to become a practice steeped in ritual. Hunters generally were members of hunting clubs and organizations, which had permission to hunt specific state-owned forests, under the auspices of forestry organizations. Both the members of the hunting clubs, and those involved in forestry, had traditional hunting clothes, a sort of regalia that by the time of the Third Reich, had evolved into a uniform. These men carried traditional hunting cutlasses and daggers as part of their regalia. These was an almost infinite variety of these edged weapons, made by many makers, and available in countless styles to suit individual preferences. Some of these hunting cutlasses and daggers were mostly utilitarian and practical and were used for the final thrust at the close of a successful hunt. Others were ornate, with detailed ornamentation, and were used for formal and ceremonial occasions when the traditional regalia were worn. These edged weapons were expensive and very personal objects for their original owners.
