Historical Description:  The Brunswick Skull (Brunswick Totenkopf) entered the 20th century as a long-standing emblem of the Duchy of Brunswick’s military heritage, with origins dating back to the Black Brunswickers of the Napoleonic Wars. By the late Imperial and interwar periods, its use had become codified within certain traditional German cavalry formations, most notably the 2nd and 17th Brunswick-affiliated Hussar regiments, which retained the skull as a hereditary symbol of regional identity and remembrance. Unlike later political uses of skull imagery, the Brunswick design reflected lineage, mourning for the fallen dukes of Brunswick, and the legacy of the 1809 anti-Napoleonic volunteer corps.

In the years leading up to World War II, as the German military was reorganized and expanded under the Wehrmacht, some successor units and veterans’ organizations continued to reference this older tradition. The Brunswick Skull, where it appeared, was employed in a historical and regimental context rather than as an ideological emblem, maintaining a visual continuity with the cavalry heritage of the pre-1918 German Army. Its presence in this era thus represented the survival of a regional military symbol rooted in the 19th century, distinct from and predating the politicized skull motifs adopted by certain groups during the Nazi period.
