Product Description: A superb and well-detailed Imperial German regimental stein commemorating the service of Gefreiter Örtel with the 3rd Schleswig Dragoon Regiment No. 15, 5th Eskadron, Hagenau, covering the service years 1899–1902. Of fine porcelain construction, the stein is hand-painted in vivid enamels and gilt, depicting a series of beautifully executed cavalry scenes—mounted drills, charge formations, and camp life—encircled by laurel wreaths, and Imperial banners. The regiment’s title and service inscription are prominently displayed to the front, along with Gefreiter Örtel’s name and period of service. The reverse features a small unit roster naming 29 fellow troopers from his Eskadron, providing a rare personal connection to the regiment’s active personnel.
The pewter lid is crowned with an impressive fully-modeled cavalryman in Dragoon uniform astride his horse, symbolizing the valor and esprit de corps of the mounted arm. The thumb lift is fashioned as a woman holding a crown, and the interior reveals a lithophane depicting a tender farewell between soldier and sweetheart, visible when held to light—a poignant touch characteristic of these commemorative vessels.
This regimental stein remains in excellent ++ condition, with bright, undiminished color and crisp detail throughout, showing only minimal evidence of age. No chips or cracking present, and the pewter lid functions as intended and retains its original shape. Steins of the 3rd Schleswig Dragoons, a proud regiment of the Imperial German cavalry with service roots in Alsace, are particularly prized among collectors for their artistry and historical resonance. A fine and evocative example of early 20th-century German craftsmanship, embodying both the pride of the soldier and the pageantry of the Imperial era.
Historical Description: Imperial German regimental steins were commemorative beer mugs presented to soldiers at the end of their service in the Kaiser’s army, primarily between 1871 and 1918. These pieces celebrated regimental pride and personal service, making them both sentimental keepsakes and patriotic symbols.
Crafted from porcelain or stoneware, the steins were richly decorated with hand-painted scenes of military life, patriotic emblems, and inscriptions naming the soldier, unit, and service dates. Pewter lids often featured ornate finials—such as soldiers or artillery shells—and some included lithophanes depicting farewells between soldiers and loved ones.
Beyond their beauty, regimental steins reflected the camaraderie, loyalty, and pride of Imperial Germany’s armed forces. Today, they are highly sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship, individuality, and insight into the culture of the pre–World War I German military.
